Christian Guitar Dads: Steven Curtis Chapman

If you grew up listening to Christian music over the past several decades, there's a good chance Steven Curtis Chapman has been part of your musical journey.

But what makes Chapman especially interesting to Christian Guitar Dads is that his musical story began with his own father.

Chapman's dad, Herb, was a musician and guitar teacher who owned a music store in Kentucky. Steven grew up surrounded by guitars and music, and he learned to play guitar as a young boy. His father didn't simply introduce him to an instrument—he helped plant the seeds for a lifelong passion.

Chapman eventually moved to Nashville and became one of the most successful artists in contemporary Christian music, earning five Grammy Awards and numerous Dove Awards.

But his greatest legacy may be his family.

Steven and his wife, Mary Beth, raised six children, including three daughters adopted from China. Their family also experienced heartbreaking loss when their five-year-old daughter, Maria Sue, died in a tragic accident in 2008. That experience deeply influenced Chapman's music and led to the album Beauty Will Rise.

Through both incredible joy and devastating sorrow, Chapman has continued to point people toward God's grace, faithfulness, and hope.

And that's something every Christian Guitar Dad can learn from.

Your child doesn't need you to be a famous musician.

They need you to sit beside them.

Teach them a chord.

Play a song.

Pray together.

Laugh when you miss the chord change.

Years from now, they may not remember the song perfectly—but they may remember Dad sitting beside them with a guitar, teaching them that music, family, and faith belong together.

That's a legacy worth passing on.

A Psalm for the Christian Guitar Dad

Psalm 96:1 says:"Sing to the Lord a new song; sing to the Lord, all the earth."

Sometimes that "new song" is played on a concert stage.

And sometimes it's played a little out of tune by a dad and his child sitting together in the living room.

Either way, God hears it.
